Standing up for Students and Teachers
June 14, 2019
On the doorsteps, I have heard from many constituents who are frustrated by the changes being made to our education system by the Premier and his Conservative provincial government.
As a grandparent of three grandkids, one of whom will soon enter the school system, I share these pressing concerns.
Doug Ford and Conservartive politicians continue to make reckless cuts that are impacting our kids. The federal government can, and must, play a role supporting young Canadians - from kindergarten to grade 12 and beyond as well as the teachers, ECE's and staff working day in and day out.
That is exactly what the Liberal Federal Government has done.
- In 2016, we introduced a new refundable tax credit so teachers get support for school supplies purchased out of pocket.
- While Doug Ford cuts STEM courses, we’ve partnered with non-profits that work directly with schools to teach coding and digital literacy skills.
- Through the CANCode program, over one million kids have learned how to code including 7839 Guelph students.
- In the 2019 budget, we announced the governments’ plan to work with the provinces and territories to create a national school breakfast program.
These are just three examples of how our Liberal government has found creative solutions to support students, teachers and our education system.
With your support, I will continue to be a strong defender of our public schools.
